How about a change to Quickness that allows the target(s) to perform the same action twice at the same time? This would give a move at 2xTMR, or two melee attacks, but not move and then melee attack. One could extend this into any normal action twice, or a contiguous 2-action action, such as prepare & drink, prepare and attack, prepare and fire, aim & fire or prepare and cast. (?Charge and charge/attack?, mount & move on horseback?) If the second action was not possible, it would be lost. e.g. the opponent is killed after the first attack. No second action allowed except maybe cleaning the sword. The important thing is that a single action decision is made, and then resolved at one time, on the target's normal initiative (or at +10). This prevents the "top of the second half of the pulse" complexities, and balances the "fun" a little by allowing a player to participate once per pulse whether quickened or not, although their character may do more than another character. Would be OK in a low-magic, high-detail combat campaign, but not ours. Reply-To: dq@dq.sf.org.nz I also found this document while I was cleaning up but I have no idea who authored it. I believe this one is one of ours and would like to submit it as a proposal. Some Recommendations for the Ranger Skill: 1. Drop the curative plants section. This is more appropriately covered in the Herbalist skill, and it is generally impractical to use it on adventure since a full twelve hours are required. 2. From the Ranger Environment List drop Ruins and Crypts as these micro-environments are not appropriate to almost all the ranger sub-skills - which refer to natural settings and operate in large areas. Add from the following: Freshwater Lakes and Streams, Coasts (including reefs), Arctic and Tundra, Tropical Jungle. 3. Allow Rangers to add additional specialisations at Rank 6 and Rank 10 should they be able to spend time studying in that environment. Note that the first specialisation should also be gained in an environment the Ranger has experienced. Thereafter allow additional specialisations to be added at a flat cost of 2500 ep and six weeks study in the environment. This would add reason to rank the skill, and make it more flexible. 4. Add a section covering the survival skills Rangers are assumed to have in play such as the ability to find good campsites, water, and firewood; fire-building; hunting, fishing and trapping game; foraging; basic camp cooking; building basic shelters and other structures such as travois; first aid skills and skills in crossing difficult terrain. Consider whether Rangers should have a weather sense. This would make for greater consistency between GMs. Keith (phaeton@ihug.co.nz) -- to unsubscribe see http://www.kurahaupo.gen.nz/mailing-lists.html --
