I don't think that Dispel Magic was written with this situation in mind - it
isn't clear on what happens when there are queued instances of the same
spell. I've assumed that it only effects one instance of the spell named
(which could be queued if there is a different spell with a same effect
active), but I don't think it has ever come up in practice IME.

If it does remove all instances of the named spell, then flying near a
decent Namer becomes harder to prepare for, for instance. I play both sides
of this particular issue :-)

My gut feel is that GM whim would normally decide on 'it zaps one instance',
but I don't think a GM would think you are trying it on if you ask.

Cheers
Errol

Hi all,

With Fire Armour and the current rules you could reasonably say:

Get the fire mage to cast 10 Fire Armour spells on the warrior at rank 10
for a duration of 11 hours (1 in effect and 9 queuing).

The warrior goes into battle and gets hit with a lot of fire damage.

Once the points of protection from the first fire armour is used up the
spell will end.

Then the second one will kick in because the first fire armour spells
duration would have ended (when the points of protection are used up).

This means that given a rank 10 fire armour spell (44 points of fire
protection) the warrior can in effect have 440 points of protection.

I do not feel comfortable with this seemingly reasonable interpretation.

won't the enemy namer just dispell counter disjunction or whatever the fire
armour which would remove the running spell and those cued?

There have been several discussions about changing the stacking/queuing rules before, the final
conclusion has so far been that alternative methods break more than they fix. I'm not saying it
shouldn't be discussed, just to not ignore the common finding of previous discussions.

My preference is for a Greatest Effect Applies type rule, but to make it work requires changing
dozens of spells, and probably still has flaws once you add in non-standard items and abilities.

I'm resigned to the Devil we know on this topic.

My vote is to leave the stacking/queuing rule alone and fix the one or two spells that need it.

I prefer the proposal (can't remember who suggested it) of removing the line stating the (Fire
Armour) spell ends when the protection is gone.

Agree except I'd remove option 3) I don't like having 'wibble' options in voting, make a choice or
abstain. I'll abstain from this vote as I find it hard to overcome my vested interest as a
player.

This has always been an option and never been a problem. Bully for you if you can do it and
actually gain some benefit from it.

I found that when I GM'd for the first time last summer this was a key area
of the rules that I had to consider.

Not being much of a rule junky I was not terribly up to speed with how my
party might use the rules to their advantage. On the night I threw in an
extra opponent with rk 20 D-flames and rk 20 Hell fire, and that sorted
things a bit.

The other curly one was weapon of flames and does it triple damage on a
triple. A friendly GM colleague suggested later that if it does for the
party it does for the opposition. Again - simple in game fix.

I imagine now I have had this initial trial by fire that in future I will be
alerted to the possibilities and have an answer to "can I stack fire amour
it says its possible in the rules.

However I do like the suggestion that SoS goes on both Str and End with 2
earth mages, this makes the second less redundant, but then when does it
actually come up.

Per the current rules: "If two spells affect different attributes (e.g. PS &
FT), they stack", suggesting that option #1 is the status quo (and further
suggesting that the example was written with SoS explicitly in mind (since
at the time it affected PS or FT, rather than PS or EN as it does now).

I would expect that the opposition will sometimes have the option as well,
as cults etc tend to focus on particular colleges (so are moderately likey
to have multiple mages of the same college).

OTOH, the party tend to throw money (e.g. Waters of Str) at the problem
(when they have a chance to buff up in advance).
